POINTS OF INTEREST
Birthplace of the first U.S. President (February 22, 1732), the Park includes a memorial mansion, colonial farm, gardens and tombs of several generations of Washingtons. The original home on Pope's Creek Farm burned in 1780--the present memorial mansion is typical of Washington's time. When Washington was two, his family moved about fifty mile up the Potomac to the large, undeveloped plantation that was later called Mount Vernon. His father was often away at his ironworks, about thirty miles away, so, when George was six, the family moved to the 260-acre Ferry Farm on the Rappahannock River.
Picknicking, interpretive exhibits, guided tours, and nature walks are available. Food, supplies, and overnight accommodations are available in fredericksburg, Montross, and Colonial Beach. Visitor's can also see Robert E. Lee's birthplace in Stratford Hall, near Montross.
